Kalenice: Hotels and accommodations

In Kalenice, the originally Gothic Hvížďalka Fortress, house number 50, together with its rampart, is one of the listed monuments. Its medieval core was remodeled during the Renaissance; around 1530, the fortress was conquered and burned down.

Culture and history

In Kalenice's present-day castle park, Hvížďalka Fortress has been preserved as a single-story building with a rectangular floor plan and a half-hipped gable roof. The Late Gothic tower fortress of Hvížďalka has a barrel-vaulted cellar and a ground floor. It was surrounded by a moat with a rampart and an outer moat; remains of the fortifications have survived on the eastern, southern, and western sides.

On request, from April to September, pre-arranged visits to the immediate surroundings of Hvížďalka Fortress, the Gothic cellar, and part of the gradually reconstructed interior are possible on weekends. Exceptionally, other months or weekdays may also be arranged in advance.

A chapel dedicated to Saint Francis stands in Kalenice's village square. It was built in 1832 on the site of an older wooden church.

Kalenice is first mentioned in 1045 in a deed of donation issued by Duke Břetislav I to Břevnov Monastery.

Cycling routes

The 10.1 km-long “Za Kladrubským drakem” cycling route passes through Kalenice, as does the 12.8 km-long “Krajem rybníků” route.

On the “Za dávných časů a jejich časoměření” cycling route, the first station when coming from Horažďovice is in Kalenice, by the local fortress.
