Řasnice between Riverine Nature and the Golden Trail

Řasnice lies in the Řasnice Valley between Horní Vltavice and Strážný, about 3 km east of Strážný. The settlement lies on the lower slope of a narrowed valley. The boundary of Šumava National Park runs through Řasnice along the Řasnice River. The river course, valley shape and park boundary define the spatial character of the settlement.

Nature

Near Strážný and the Řasnice River lies the Splavské rašeliniště natural monument. It protects a valley peat bog with typical vegetation. From the former Salzer Mill to Hliniště, the Řasnice forms wild landscapes that are almost untouched by people. The peat bog, river course and protected landscape lie in the vicinity of Řasnice and connect different landscape areas along the river.

Hiking

The Řasnatá Vltava route leads via Lenora, Vlčí Jámy, Řasnice, the Splavské rašeliniště and the Radvanovický hřbet back to Lenora. Its course includes moderate and locally steep ascents and descents. In addition, the route has waterlogged ground, slippery stones, tall grass and forest paths in some sections. At individual points, fallen trees must be climbed over. When preparing for a hike, the ground conditions and obstacles should therefore be considered as specific trail characteristics in addition to the route itself. On a route of this kind, current trail conditions should be checked before setting out, especially if waterlogged sections or fallen trees are a factor.

History

Řasnice probably originated around 1720; the settlement was first mentioned in 1790. The buildings developed along the route of the Golden Trail between Vimperk and Strážný. Historically, Řasnice is classified as a loosely arranged short forest-strip settlement. The former name Pumperle derives from a water pumping station; its designation was based on “pumpe”. The historic connection with the Golden Trail and the surviving settlement form are therefore among the characteristic features of the village.

Architectural Heritage

The surviving ensemble of the former Salzer Mill in Řasnice comprises the mill and two associated houses. The former Salzer Mill on the Řasnice retains its original building fabric and numerous characteristic details. Houses Nos. 20 and 24 are also among the best-preserved buildings in Řasnice. Together, the mill and residential buildings form a surviving architectural ensemble on the Řasnice.

South of Řasnice, a mill was built on the right bank of the Řasnice in the second half of the 19th century. The original residential buildings belonged to the Šumava log-house type. Shingles were used for roofing and for cladding the vertical weather-exposed sides. The Tomaschkových farmstead is also part of Řasnice’s historic villagescape. The building forms thus range from the mill to the residential houses typical of Šumava and their shingle cladding.

Historic Traces

Near Strážný there is an almost 1 km-long system of preserved road remnants from the Vimperk branch of the Golden Trail. Its end lies about 100 m north of the Řasnice stream. The road remnants therefore lie near the river and the historic route between Vimperk and Strážný.
