Morkovice-Slížany – Cycling, History and Hotels

Morkovice-Slížany can be explored from two different perspectives: the 69-kilometre Velký-Litenčický Circuit connects Vyškov with Morkovice-Slížany, while the Basket-Making Museum offers an insight into basketry and related fields. Morkovice-Slížany also has a municipal outdoor swimming pool with a 50-metre pool, which is also available to visitors. Culture, history and various forms of transport thus exist side by side, without the individual places and attractions requiring the same experience.

Culture

An important site is the protected heritage complex of the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. It includes the church, the cemetery, the enclosing wall with a gate and wicket, and the staircase. The church has a simple, rectangular and undivided floor plan. Above it is a gabled roof with a lantern-like sanctus bell turret. The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist in Morkovice, which stands on a former cemetery, is also part of the historical context. According to the oldest written records, this church is believed to have stood here before 1389. A reference from 1437 mentions a fortress with a farmyard in Morkovice, the town with the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, as well as ponds and forests.

Morkovice Chateau is also one of the town’s historical points of reference, but it is not open to the public. Parts of the Gothic structure have been preserved in the chateau, particularly the cellar areas and the enclosing masonry of the ground floor in the north and east wings. The surviving structural elements thus stand alongside the written evidence of the former fortress and the settlement’s structure at that time.

The Morkovice Basket-Making Museum reopened in Morkovice-Slížany on 12 June 2010 and is devoted exclusively to basketry and related fields. It is located in one of the oldest and best-preserved houses in the town. The museum is open to visitors who would like to see everything that can be made from willow rods. The museum’s location and thematic focus therefore belong together: the craft is presented in a historic building in the town.

Cycling

The Velký-Litenčický Circuit is 69 kilometres long and connects Vyškov with Morkovice-Slížany. There is also the Morkovice–Nezamyslice cycle path. It is suitable for bicycles, inline skates, longboards, scooters, pushchairs and baby carriers. Near this cycle path there is a bus stop with regular connections from Kroměříž, Vyškov and Brno. When considering the route, this means that its length and connection between the towns are just as relevant as the specifically mentioned forms of transport and the available bus connections.
