Plaani – Lake, Nature and Cultural Heritage

Haanja Nature Park is not defined by a single landscape feature. Its conservation objectives encompass Estonia’s hilly upland as well as glacial meltwater valleys, cultural landscapes and the habitats of protected species. The nature park therefore brings geological formations, human-shaped landscapes and biological diversity together.

The Piusa River rises from Plaani Külajärv. Within Haanja Nature Park, the lake belongs to habitat type 3110.

Plaani St. Nicholas Church is distinctive for its architectural form and materials. Its ground plan is shaped like a Greek cross. It was built from fieldstones and red bricks. The structure also includes a bell tower, a roof turret and four smaller onion domes.

Another historical connection is the Plaani karjamõis manor outpost. It was built in the first half of the 19th century at the request of the owner of Haanja Manor. Only part of the complex has survived. Together with the old cellars, Plaani karjamõis is considered a cultural heritage site.
