Khvanchkara: Hotels and Accommodation
Khvanchkara is closely associated with a Georgian wine bearing a protected designation of origin. The Kipiani winemaking tradition began in the 1880s with Dimitri Kipiani. In Racha, viticulture and winemaking are described as an ancient sector. Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli are described as old indigenous grape varieties from Racha.
Wine and History
Khvanchkara is produced through incomplete alcoholic fermentation of the grape mash. The wine from the Kipiani tradition received the Grand Prix at an international exhibition in Belgium in 1907. The wine known as Kipiani wine was renamed Khvanchkara in 1930.
Khvanchkara is a Georgian wine with a protected designation of origin, made from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes grown in a small microzone around Khvanchkara. It may only be produced from these two grape varieties if they were harvested in the Khvanchkara microzone. The processing of the grapes and winemaking must take place within the microzone, while bottling may be carried out elsewhere in Georgia.
Landscape
The Khvanchkara wine microzone is located in the Ambrolauri area of Racha, on the southern slopes of the Lechkhumi Range and on the right bank of the Rioni River. The microzone has a humid climate with moderately cold winters and hot, relatively dry summers.
The commercial vineyards designated for Khvanchkara are located at elevations of 450 to 750 metres above sea level. The factors cited as influencing the quality of Khvanchkara wine include the south-facing foothills, sunlight, warmth, moderate summer temperatures and moderate humidity. The soils in Khvanchkara are described as deep humus-carbonate soils with heavy loam and light clay.
