Before the end of the 19th century, the traditional forms of livelihood in the area shifted from pastoralism to agriculture.

Jakabszállás was established as an independent municipality in 1922 under the name Szabadjakabszállás; it received its current name in 1926.

Main road 54 from Kecskemét to Sükösd runs through Jakabszállás; road 5302 branches off eastwards towards Fülöpjakab. Bus connections link the town with Kecskemét, Kiskunfélegyháza and Sükösd via Soltvadkert and Kecel.
