Key facts about Zengővárkony

Since autumn 2022, the Míves Tojás Múzeum, the Szalma-Kincs-Tár and the Tájház have all been located in a shared courtyard at Kossuth Lajos utca 6. You need two tickets for the three exhibitions: one separate ticket for the Míves Tojás Múzeum and one joint ticket for the Tájház and Szalma-Kincs-Tár. Check the ticket arrangements on site again before your visit.

You may walk in the sweet chestnut forest, but collecting chestnuts from the ground is not permitted. The entire forest was protected in 1974. During Holy Week, you can try traditional egg decorating, with help from local egg decorators.

What experiences shape a stay?

The three exhibitions share a courtyard, but they do not all share the same ticket. So if you would like to visit them all, plan on getting two tickets. At the Szalma-Kincs-Tár, guided tours and explanations from the attendants are available on request. Ask about the current arrangements and applicable tickets before your visit.

The Vadkan Vili Sétálója walking trail also leads through Zengővárkony to places in the village. At rest stops, you can hear or read stories about Vili and Hungarian folk tales. This gives you different interests to choose from when planning activities: exhibitions, a themed village walk or time in the sweet chestnut forest.

What should you keep in mind when visiting the sweet chestnut forest?

The forest is suitable for a walk, but picking up fallen chestnuts is not allowed because the trees are privately owned. The entire sweet chestnut forest was protected in 1974. Keep both of these facts in mind when planning: you can explore the forest on foot, but should not take any chestnuts with you.

If you would like to combine nature and culture, another option is the late Baroque Zengővárkonyi Református Templom. For a seasonal activity, you could try decorating traditional eggs during Holy Week. Local egg decorators can help. Plan your visit for this period if you would like to try egg decorating yourself.

What cultural themes are there in the wider destination of Branau?

Looking beyond Zengővárkony to the wider destination of Branau, you will find further cultural themes. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated 4th-century tombs: underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and Christian wall paintings. Among other things, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs brings together exhibitions on the history of the family and the factory, as well as “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition.” It also offers children outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. These are attractions in the wider destination of Branau, not in Zengővárkony.
