  • The 173-hectare Göbe-erdő, also called Göbe-morotva, lies mostly in Tiszadorogma and, to a smaller extent, in the area of Egyek.
  • Notable sites in the town include the late Baroque–Empire-style Roman Catholic church on the main square and a World War I memorial on the green in front of it.

What landscapes define Egyek?

The protected areas give Egyek’s natural landscape a clear identity. The precise location of the Ohat-erdő TVT is important: the larger part lies within Egyek’s administrative area. The area is strictly protected and may only be visited with a permit. Check the permit requirements in advance if you plan to visit.

The remaining parts of the Pusztakócsi marshes, which have been protected since 1973, are a separate area. Their visitor area can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Check for any route-specific restrictions before setting out. The two protected areas offer different considerations when planning: a permit is essential for the Ohat-erdő, while the specified ways of getting around are a useful starting point for the marshes’ visitor area.

The Göbe-erdő is also part of the landscape overview, but it does not lie entirely within Egyek: of its 173 hectares, most are in Tiszadorogma and a smaller part is in the area of Egyek. Part of the Ohati-halastavak is fed by the Nyugati-főcsatorna; the Ohat IV fishing lake is also located in Egyek.

What architectural and memorial sites are there?

A Roman Catholic church dating from the late Baroque and Empire periods stands on the main square. Stone statues of Saints Peter and Paul are part of its design. On the green in front of the church, a memorial created by Béla Horváth commemorates the First World War: it depicts Christ holding a fallen soldier in his arms.

Another striking building is the school building of the Újtelepi általános iskola, constructed in 1925. It is designed in the Székler style; the facade features the scene of the Blood Pact, with the Hungarian coat of arms visible in the center. The church, memorial, and school building each have a different emphasis: sacred architecture, remembrance of war, and a historically themed facade.

The Kálváriás cemetery on Bartók Béla Street is also notable for its landscape and cultural setting: it is located on a double kurgan and is the only exclusively Catholic cemetery in Hajdú-Bihar County. Its location and this regional distinction add to the picture of local architecture and memorial culture.

How does Egyek fit into the Hajdú-Bihar destination?

Egyek is located within the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination. The UNESCO World Heritage site area of Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta covers nearly 75,000 hectares of the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. This cultural landscape preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism.

Other nature and cultural experiences are also part of the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination. The Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail offers walks of 3.6, 5.4, or 10 kilometers, with no difficult sections. The pond system is a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage site, and a Natura 2000 site. The Shepherds’ Museum focuses on the lives of shepherds, as well as handmade clothing, tools, and decorated personal belongings; the museum is housed in a former coach house that was part of the Hortobágyi-Csárda complex.

When searching, check the specific location and service details of each accommodation. If you plan to visit the Ohat-erdő TVT, also take the permit requirement into account; it applies to this protected area.
