Kalaznó: Church Art and Paths Along the Donát Stream

The Protestant church was built between 1787 and 1790 and features a painted U-shaped gallery balustrade. The local history collection comprises 180 catalogued objects displayed in German, Székely and Upper Hungarian room settings. There is a walking path along the Donát Stream; beside Becker Spring, there is a fire pit for day-trippers.

A distinctive feature of the church interior is its painted U-shaped gallery balustrade. The panels near the altar depict the Evangelists and Apostles; the sections of the gallery facing the organ show scenes from the life of Jesus. The motifs are therefore distinguished by their position on the gallery: the figures mentioned are near the altar, while the scenes from Jesus’s life are on the side facing the organ.

A memorial to those who fell in the First World War stands in the church garden. It was unveiled in 1934 and is the work of sculptor László Schmidmann. Alongside the late Baroque church’s construction history, it provides a separate remembrance of the war dead.

The Kalaznói Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény displays traditional costumes, furniture, tools and other household items. Its 180 catalogued objects are arranged in German, Székely and Upper Hungarian room settings. The collection thus brings together different types of objects and three named room styles.

Exhibition panels cover beekeeping, sheep farming, weaving and bread-making. The subjects range from animal husbandry and production to crafts and food preparation. A separate section presents Elekes Dénes’s life through photographs, contemporary documents and personal belongings. Elekes was settled in Kalaznó in 1945 and is buried there. This biographical perspective complements the material topics with the story of one individual’s life.

Traditional Swabian longhouses and half-timbered barns in Kalaznó feature patterned veranda posts, death doors, Art Nouveau plaster ornaments and windows with shutters. These features span different elements of the buildings, from veranda posts and doorways to wall decoration and windows. The local architectural heritage therefore includes more than the church: the residential and farm buildings mentioned also have distinctive design details.

A traditional estate is also home to a private photo collection called Fotótár, described as Hungary’s largest private photo collection.

A walking path runs along the right bank of the Donát Stream between two pedestrian passages. A fire pit for day-trippers is available beside Becker Spring. The spring is next to the Asó Passage and is named after the Becker family, who used to live nearby. This gives visitors both a specific route and a local spot named after a family to consider when planning their trip.
