The wine cellars and press houses are part of this heritage. Numerous cellars have been preserved on former vineyard slopes, and are protected or locally significant. They add a distinct architectural history connected with the area’s former winegrowing to the more than 50 registered historic buildings in the preservation area.

Szigliget Castle is a 750-year-old fortress. Another way to explore the town’s early history is through Avasi Church, considered possibly Szigliget’s oldest surviving building. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1846 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

Óvár, the Old Castle, is also connected with an earlier history: the foundation walls of an ancient fortification lie beneath the hill “The Queen’s Skirt” (Királyné szoknyája). Another historic building, Esterházy Palace, has housed a Literary Creative House since 1952. These places represent different aspects of Szigliget’s past—from fortifications and religious buildings to the palace’s present-day cultural role.

The “Weapons Through the Ages” exhibition is housed in the gallery building on Kisfaludy Street in the Old Village. It displays weapons from prehistoric times to the present and illustrates the development of warfare and the military traditions of past centuries. The Kamon-kő educational trail, marked with a blue “T,” starts and ends at the church in Szigliget. Its start and end points are therefore in the same place. If you want to combine a walk with a specific cultural starting point, this trail offers a clearly defined route.

The preserved cellars and press houses point to the town’s history of winegrowing. Szászi Birtok offers a guided wine tasting by prior arrangement. It introduces visitors to the family history, the winery’s philosophy and its wines. In the wider North Balaton destination, Badacsony offers its own distinctive landscape and wine-related appeal. The town is in Veszprém County on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, opposite the city of Fonyód. The volcanic hill is known for hiking trails, panoramas and unusual geological formations called basalt organ pipes. Special grape varieties grow on its slopes and are used to make Badacsony wine. These features describe Badacsony and add to the picture of regional variety, while Szigliget’s own highlights are its castle, local history and heritage.
