Shengeldy: Hotels and Accommodations

In the Middle Ages, Shenggeldy was a trading settlement and marketplace on the Silk Road. Those wishing to book a hotel in Shenggeldy can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture

A medieval caravanserai near Shenggeldy dates from the 11th to 12th century and covered an area measuring 70 by 70 meters. The surviving fortress walls are approximately 1.5 to 2 meters high. The archaeological site of the Shenggeldy caravanserai is located in the center of Shenggeldy on the right bank of a river of the same name.

The archaeological enclosure of the Shenggeldy caravanserai is square, measures 85 by 85 meters, and has corner towers. The caravanserai was rebuilt in the 11th to 12th century, as indicated by remains of fired bricks in its walls. A water supply system made of clay pipes was also observed beside the settlement.

Shenggeldy contains the remains of a medieval fortified settlement identified as a caravanserai on historic trade routes. Fortress walls, ruins of corner towers, and a defensive ditch are visible; excavations took place in 2014.

The 1975 obelisk commemorating fellow villagers who died in the Great Patriotic War is a memorial monument in Shenggeldy. The rural Shenggeldy Mosque has two minarets and a dome. Joldykiz promoted the traditional Kazakh kimishek headdress in Shenggeldy.

Geographical Setting

Shenggeldy is located on the Almaty–Oskemen highway. Shenggeldy is the turnoff to the route from Post No. 1 of Altyn-Emel National Park, which leads to the Tamgaly Tas petroglyphs and the Besshatyr burial mounds. The Altynemel Visitor Center is located in Shenggeldy at Post No. 1.

In the wider vicinity of Shenggeldy, Altyn-Emel National Park encompasses the northern shore of the Kapchagay Reservoir and the Ili River. A historic Silk Road route described in connection with Shenggeldy ran from the Ili–Kapchagay passage through Shenggeldy and onward toward Altyn-Emel and the Koksu Valley.

The settlement of Eki Oguz is described as being located on the Ili River; from there, caravans continued on to China.
