Culture and history

The Saryarka Archaeology and Ethnography Museum in Karagandy presents material from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, life-size petroglyphs, a reconstruction of a Bronze Age burial, ancient Turkic statues and a traditional yurt. The Buketov University History Museum offers free guided tours in Kazakh, Russian or English.

The Mine Museum of Karagandy is an underground educational mine at a depth of about 15 metres. It recreates working conditions and displays underground workings, mining equipment, conveyor belts, mine cars and support systems. It also explains the history of the Karaganda Coal Basin and mining. The Memorial Museum of Academician E. A. Buketov reconstructs his study and displays personal belongings, documents, manuscripts, scientific works, photographs, awards and interior furnishings.

The Shakhtyorskaya Slava Memorial Complex commemorates the work of miners in the Karaganda Coal Basin and was opened in 1974. The Anet-Baba Mosque is described as one of the largest mosques in Kazakhstan and as an important spiritual centre of the Karaganda Region.

Nature

The Buketov University Nature Museum in Karagandy presents animal and plant species from Kazakhstan, Southeast Asia, South America and Australia. The Karagandy State Zoological Park was established between 1936 and 1938. Its collection includes more than 200 animal species and over 1,000 individual animals, including large mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and aquarium animals.

Leisure

Central Beach is a lakeside beach in the Central Park of Culture and Recreation; in summer, visitors can sunbathe or swim there. The park also has a boat station where boats and catamarans are rented for trips on the lake. The park's cycling paths are connected to a bicycle rental service for children and adults.

Paths for walking and cycling run through Alash Square. There are sports grounds, national art objects and anamorphic installations. These installations are dedicated to regional natural and tourist attractions, including Bekatau-Ata, Shaitankol, Priozersk and Botakaru.

Sports

The GGG sports complex in Karagandy offers boxing, basketball, volleyball, swimming, wrestling and weightlifting, among other activities.
