The Korneti–Peļļi Nature Reserve encompasses a chain of 11 lakes running from east to west in subglacial depressions. It protects hillside forests, boreal forests and the vegetation of Littorella uniflorae. At the same time, the area has Natura 2000 status and is included in the protected landscape area of Veclaicene.
The Korneti–Peļļi ravine is a 26-kilometre-long main depression. A chain of 16 lakes lies in its deepest depressions. The ravine is best experienced in the vicinity of Korneti.
Which trails and viewpoints are there?
Several trails focus on different aspects. The orange-marked Drusku Hillfort Trail is 3.5 kilometres long and starts at the Veclaicene administration building in Korneti. The Drusku hillfort after which it is named lies about 90 metres above the water level of Lake Pilskalna. From the Drusku Hillfort Nature Trail, you can see the Alūksne and Haanja Uplands in Estonia, as well as Munamägi.
The Lake Raipala Trail runs along the shores of Lake Ievas, Lake Raipala and Lake Trumulītis; along the way, you can turn off to the Mišu Medus muzejs. The Health Trail is 2.5 kilometres long and includes 10 exercises. The 4.5-kilometre Ilgāja–Naudas-akmens Trail passes the only island in Lake Ilgāja in Veclaicene and the historic Naudas akmens.
The Peļļu Trail also combines experiencing nature with spending time by the water: it can be combined with swimming in Lakes Ilgāja and Smilšāja. There are four nature trails in the picturesque surroundings of the Korneti Sightseeing Tower; the tower itself is 27 metres high.
Which natural and cultural sites are worth visiting?
The Drusku hillfort is a national archaeological monument on the northern shore of Lake Pilskalna. The Māras pēdas akmens stone has several depressions, two of which resemble footprints. Dieva kalns rises about 60 metres opposite Lake Klotiņa. Five decorative corner pillars remain from the old Korneti castle complex.
The Mišu Medus muzejs collects and restores historic beekeeping equipment and photographs. At the educational apiary, you can learn about bees. The Veclaicene History Depositary presents the nature, people, history, ethnography and education of Veclaicene. A particular focus is placed on the historic border between Latvia and Estonia, as well as the associated way of life and language.
