Culture and History
The Alytus–Varėna route includes 17 preserved former railway structures. Many of them were added to the Lithuanian Register of Cultural Heritage in 2017–2018. Together, they form an open-air experience of railway history.
Cycling Route
The route is approximately 50 km long and runs mainly along gravel and forest roads. About 10 km are paved, and there are no climbs; children can manage the route relatively easily.
The Olita–Orany route (Alytus–Varėna) can be started in Varėna at the railway station and followed in the direction of Alytus.
Geographical Context
Varėna is a city in southeastern Lithuania, in the Dzūkija region, and the seat of the municipal administration of Varėna District.
The settlement developed along the Warsaw–Vilnius–Saint Petersburg railway line and was first mentioned in 1413.
