Berane connects the Lim Valley with the surrounding mountain areas of Bjelasica, Mokra, Cmiljevica and Turjak. This landscape also includes the glacial lakes of Pešića, Šiška and Ursulovačka.
Culture and History
The Polimlje Museum in Berane presents archaeological and ethnographic collections relating to the heritage of the Lim Valley and Polimlje. In the centre of Berane, the Gavro Vuković Memorial House preserves his former study, his library, personal belongings, his sword and manuscripts.
Berane's main street was designed in 1862 by the architect Rizvan-beg in the style of European metropolitan avenues. Restaurants, cafés and pastry shops along it serve local specialities, including sweet kačamak, grilled trout and burek. The Vakufska House in the central town centre is a religious endowment from the Ottoman period and is connected with the city's first public fountains and water supply.
Several monasteries are located around Berane. Ćelije Monastery is situated in Kaludra, 9 kilometres from Berane, beside the Kaludarska River; its church and monastery complex were reconstructed in 2001. Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery near Berane was founded in the early 13th century and is described as a spiritual and historical centre. Šudikova Monastery is located 4.5 kilometres from Berane in the Tifran Gorge and is associated with a long-standing spiritual and cultural role.
Nature and Trails
The Jasikovac park forest in Berane features well-maintained walking trails, rest areas and picnic sites. There are also marked recreational routes of less than 10 kilometres, including Berane–Tifran and Berane–Budimlja–Gradac. The second route connects the town with an archaeological and cultural site.
Water
The Lim River around Berane supports rafting, kayaking and fishing due to its water volume, temperature and diversity of fish.
