Berane

Berane lies in the Lim Valley. To the west are Bjelasica and its foothills; to the east are Cmiljevica and Turjak. The main ridge of Bjelasica extends for 20 km to Lubnice and Berane. There are five glacial lakes in the Suvodo–Šiška area. This setting between the valley and the mountain regions shapes the nature and cultural experiences you can consider during your stay.

There are marked hiking trails in the Berane area, which are generally less than 10 km long and not demanding. Many have equipped viewpoints with a shelter, table and benches. Your choice will therefore depend mainly on the particular route; the trails described differ from the longer BA 01 cycling route, whose starting point is 4 km from the town centre.

The BA 01 cycling route, “Krug oko Berana” (“Circuit around Berane”), is 22.32 km long and runs mostly through rural areas. If you are interested in cycling, you can take these details into account when planning your day: the route starts outside the town centre and runs mainly through the countryside. In addition, marked mountain biking routes connect Berane with Bjelasica, Cmiljevica and Turjak.

The Lim is also part of the local range of experiences. The rafting section of the river through Berane includes the Tifran Gorge; Tifran can be reached from Berane by following the route along the Lim. Anglers have four fishing areas in the municipality’s fishing waters: two fly-fishing areas, one spinning area and one general fishing area. A fly-fishing area was established in 2009. It extends for about 2.9 km upstream, from the Talumski Bridge to the new fire station.

Jasikovac Park Forest is home to a memorial complex commemorating the battles of the National Liberation Struggle. Its central feature is the Spomen-dom, built in 1977 to a design by architect Bogdan Bogdanović. The memorial house of Duke Gavro Vuković is in the town centre. It includes a gallery and his former study with a library; his personal belongings include his sabre and numerous manuscripts. According to experts, the house is the only secular monument with Art Nouveau features in Upper Polimlje.

The Vakufska kuća is in the town centre. A large salon is on the ground floor, with an extensive library and rooms for prayer above. Other cultural sites are outside the centre: Šudikova Monastery is 4.5 km from the centre, tucked away in the Tifran Gorge on the road from Berane to Bijelo Polje. It was known as an important spiritual and cultural centre with respected schools. Ćelije Monastery is in the village of Kaludra, 9 km from Berane, on the Kaludarska rijeka River, and is dedicated to Saint Luke the Apostle.

Glavna ulica is now home to restaurants, cafés and pastry shops. Dining options are therefore part of the townscape, alongside the cultural sites in the centre. Traditional Upper Polimlje cuisine includes priganice, kačamak, cheese, pita and mantije. These dishes are regional examples; they describe the cuisine of Upper Polimlje, not the offerings of a particular restaurant in Berane.
