Nature

Trebjesa was designated a protected natural asset and natural monument in 2000. There is also a 5.8-kilometer circular trail for mountain bikes.

Culture

Bedem is the remains of a Roman fortification from the 4th century, a castrum built on the Salunto–Narona road. Bedem was rebuilt between 1700 and 1705 and has been preserved to this day; cultural and artistic programs take place there.

King Nikola's Palace was built in 1900 to celebrate the fortieth year of Prince Nikola's reign and has housed the Local Museum since 1951. Behind the palace, the Lapidarium displays Stećci from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. The Stećci bear carved motifs such as vines, bands, friezes, borders, crosses, arches, arrows, shields, and swords. They also depict figurative scenes of folk dances, individual figures, knightly battles, and tournaments.

The Saborna Church of St Basil of Ostrog was built on Petrova Glavica in 1900. Inside, the names of 3,098 fallen Montenegrin and Herzegovinian soldiers are displayed on silk in gilded frames. Part of the interior furnishings was donated by Queen Jelena, the daughter of King Nikola.

Surroundings

Near Nikšić lies Crvena Stijena, an archaeological site of global significance and a first-category monument. It contains 31 identified cultural layers and more than 20,000 artifacts. The archaeological collection of the Local Museum comprises more than 9,500 objects from the prehistoric site of Crvena Stijena.

Slano Lake is located in the surrounding area. After Lake Skadar, it is Montenegro's largest bird habitat. Marked hiking trails and the national TT4 cycling route are associated with Slano Lake.

The municipality of Nikšić is connected by main roads to Podgorica, the Bay of Kotor, and Žabljak.
