Geographical location

Zagórze is one of the seven sołectwos that make up Gmina Babice. The village is located on the Tenczyn Ridge; the Chechło stream forms its western boundary.

Gmina Babice has road connections via regional roads 780 and 781, as well as a connection to the A4 motorway. The municipality is located in Chrzanowski County in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, about 38 km from Kraków and 40 km from Katowice, and close to Zator, Oświęcim and Wadowice. Gmina Babice offers natural and landscape assets, a prepared network of cycling and hiking trails, cultural, natural and landscape heritage, as well as cultural events; the municipality also lies on the boundary between the southern Tenczyn Ridge and the Vistula Valley.

Culture and history

In the immediate vicinity of Zagórze lies Babice – Ruins of a 13th-century Gothic castle.

In the surroundings of Zagórze are Rudno (Tęczyn) – 14th-century castle, and Mirow – watchtower.

The documented history of Zagórze dates back to the 13th century; the first mention dates from 1228–1242, and in 1242 Zagórze became the property of the bishops of Kraków.

Local municipal history describes Zagórze as being surrounded by elevations on three sides; this feature is reflected in the settlement’s topographical name.
