Niepołomice at a glance

Niepołomice Royal Castle was built in the 1340s on the initiative of King Casimir the Great. At the beginning of the 16th century, it was converted into a royal residence in the Renaissance style under King Sigismund the Old. Today, the Muzeum Niepołomickie is housed in the castle. The Gothic Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs was built between 1350 and 1358 and was also founded by King Casimir the Great. The Regional Heritage Room offers insight into regional culture through around 400 exhibits across 120 m².

Which cultural sites can you visit?

The castle represents two distinct historical periods: its construction in the 1340s and its conversion into a royal residence at the beginning of the 16th century. The Muzeum Niepołomickie is housed in the castle. The Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs represents another precisely dated building: it was built in the Gothic style between 1350 and 1358. If you want to focus on architecture, you can compare the castle’s Renaissance reconstruction with the church’s Gothic design.

The Regional Heritage Room has a different focus. Its approximately 400 exhibits explore the material culture of villages, small towns and the affluent middle class. The exhibition covers 120 m². Its subject and scale are therefore clearly distinct from the historical landmarks of the castle and church.

What walking routes are available?

The Muzeum Niepołomickie offers organized groups a one-hour, 1 km walking tour of the town. The route goes via Podzamcze to the statue of King Casimir the Great, then continues to the market square and the Justyna statue, the Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs, the town hall, the park and the castle. The length and duration are specified, making it a clearly defined option for groups who want to visit several local sights on one tour.

Another route heads toward the Niepołomice Forest. It starts at the market square, follows Bocheńska Street past the parish church and reaches the parking lot on Road No. 75 at the edge of the forest. If you are looking for a longer activity nearby, there is an approximately 8 km horse-riding route in a forest area near Szarów, Dąbrowa, Gruszki and Staniątki. It runs exclusively along forest roads and tracks. This route is described as a riding trail and should not be confused with the one-hour walking tour of the town.
