What cultural history can you discover in Łęczyca?

The Royal Castle in Łęczyca was built around 1350 by Casimir the Great. Today, it houses the Regional Museum, with permanent archaeological, art-historical, and ethnographic exhibitions. The collection offers different ways to explore the region’s history and culture. It also features regional folk art and local crafts, including pottery, basketry, and weaving, as well as folk utility items and metalwork. A distinctive part of the collection is Poland’s largest museum collection of demonic sculptures, with more than 400 exhibits.

Buildings outside the museum also tell the story of the town. The defensive walls were built during the reign of Casimir the Great, alongside the castle. They enclosed about 9 hectares, measured approximately 1,150 meters in length, and stood around 7 meters high. A defensive tower that still stands on Kościelna Street was converted into the bell tower of St. Andrew’s Church in the 18th century. St. Andrew’s Church contains the Szczawiński family chapel and a large marble epitaph with a portrait commemorating Jakub Szczawiński. The Church of the Immaculate Conception is an early Baroque, single-nave building.
