What culture and history can you discover in WieruszĂłw?

The Pauline monastery complex brings together several historical periods: its documented origins date back to 1401, and the single-nave brick Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit was completed in 1676. Remains of Wieruszów’s former castle can also be found by the Prosna. They lie on the left bank near the mouth of the Niesób. The original castle was probably built around the middle of the 14th century.

The history of the Jewish community is also part of the town’s historical story. An independent Jewish community was established in Wieruszów in 1810, and a brick synagogue was built there in 1850. The St. Spiritus parish cemetery includes an Orthodox and a Protestant cemetery, as well as brick Catholic and Evangelical-Augsburg chapels dating from the late 19th century. Other memorial sites in the cemetery include the tomb of the Pauline monks and historic graves and tombstones dating from 1833 to 1916.

Nearby, other buildings have stories of their own: the wooden parish Church of St. Wojciech in Cieszęcin was built in 1789 and was elevated to the status of the St. Wojciech Diocesan Shrine for the Diocese of Kalisz in 1995. In Kuźnica Skakawska, the wooden Church of St. Roch dates from 1744. Its late Renaissance high altar was created in the first half of the 17th century. If you want to compare different types of sacred architecture and furnishings, these sites offer specific examples from various centuries.
