Jelenia Góra: Trails, Views and Culture

The Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy mountain biking network comprises more than 70 kilometres of trails in several towns, including Jelenia Góra. Borowy Jar has two marked hiking trails leading from Jelenia Góra towards Siedlęcin. Cultural attractions include historic buildings, art workshops and events hosted by the Dom Gerharta Hauptmanna city museum.

The official mountain biking network is called Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy. It includes trails in Jelenia Góra, Podgórzyn, Piechowice, Zachełmie, Przesieka and Borowice. The trails are named after Slavic gods and demons: Perun, Utopiec, Doppler, Zmora, Borowy, Poświst, Skarbek, Licho, Błotnik, Rokitnik, Skrzat, Jaga, Leszy and Czart. This makes it easy to distinguish cycling as a trip focus in its own right from the marked hiking trails in Borowy Jar.

Two trails are marked in Borowy Jar, one yellow and one green. Both lead from Jelenia Góra towards Siedlęcin. The Trafalgar viewpoint is on the left bank of the Bóbr and can be reached by the green trail from Jelenia Góra or from the Bobrowice III power plant. The green trail from Ścieżka Poetów also leads to this viewpoint.

From Trafalgar, you can see the Bóbr Gorge, Jelenia Góra and the Rudawy Janowickie. Another named viewpoint is the 35-metre-high Grzybek Tower on Wzgórze Krzywoustego. These two viewpoints and the trails give you specific destinations around which to plan your interest in hiking or taking in the views.

The Grodzka Tower was built in the 15th century as one of 36 fortified houses intended to strengthen the town walls. A fortified house was part of the fortifications, making the Grodzka Tower part of a larger historic defensive system. Zamek Baszta also combines a clearly described architectural form with a history of change. The castle was built in the 14th century and collapsed in 1550 after a fire. The current structure is a cylinder 7.57 metres in diameter, with an octagonal upper storey; below it is a viewing platform with a railing. The history of the collapse and the structure’s present-day form are two distinct aspects of the building.

Since 2001, the Dom Gerharta Hauptmanna city museum in Łąkowy Kamień has collected mementos of the writer’s life and work. Its programme includes concerts, literary evenings, temporary exhibitions and other cultural events for adults and younger visitors.
