Karpniki: Castle History and Park Landscape

The village’s history dates back to the 14th century. The 1305 record identifies Karpniki as a rent-paying village in the Duchy of Jawor and establishes a close connection with Sokolec Castle. These early details provide a historical context for the village’s present-day name without anticipating the castle’s later architectural development.

The castle’s modernization began in 1844. The result is described as a three-storey Neo-Gothic castle surrounded by a moat and reached by a stone arched bridge. The architecture, moat and bridge can be seen as related features of the castle: the bridge provides access across the moat, while the Neo-Gothic design defines the building.

Work on the landscape park began in 1822 under the direction of the gardener Walter from Bukowiec. Princess Marianna and Peter Josef Lenné personally supported its creation. The park ensemble includes walking terraces and paths.

A complex of fishponds lies in the lower part of Karpniki. Oaks, lime trees and hornbeams make up the old tree growth around the ponds. The park and the pond landscape thus offer different points of interest for a visit: landscaped terraces and paths here, expanses of water and the tree species mentioned above there.

The small, single-nave St. Jadwiga’s Church is a Gothic-Renaissance building with a rich interior. It was first mentioned in 1399; in the second half of the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style using older Gothic masonry. The church thus illustrates both an early historical reference and a later structural change.

The furnishings include a polychrome Renaissance wooden altar, a 17th-century pulpit and an 18th-century Rococo side altar. There is also a collection of Baroque paintings and a figurative epitaph for Friedrich von Kanitz, who died in 1582. A yellow hiking trail leads from Karpniki to the Szwajcarka mountain hut. Krzyżna Góra is also nearby: at 654 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Góry Sokole. Metal railings secure its rocky summit, which offers views of Karpniki, the Rudawy Janowickie, the Karkonosze and Jelenia Góra. This gives visitors a named hiking route and a nearby viewpoint to choose between, depending on their interests.
