Marczyce: Landscape and Village History

Marczyce lies in two microregions and offers views of the Karkonosze Mountains, the Jelenia Góra Valley and nearby bodies of water. Historic crosses and half-timbered houses are part of the village’s character; a blue hiking trail runs through the village and continues to Góra Grodna.

The northwestern part of the village, towards Stawy Podgórzyńskie, lies within the Obniżenie Sobieszowskie. The eastern and northeastern parts belong to the Wzgórza Łomnickie. Among the older historical remains in Marczyce are penitential crosses dating from the 14th century, near the village community centre on Zamkowa Street. Two half-timbered houses also offer insights into different histories of construction and use. A half-timbered house from the late 18th century formerly served as a school. It is distinct from a listed half-timbered residential and farm building, which was built in 1716 and remodelled in 1730.

The village’s history also includes an earlier role as a summer resort. Marczyce grew in importance in this capacity during the 19th century, attracting spa guests from nearby Cieplice. Together, the buildings and crosses create a picture that extends beyond the landscape: those interested in local history will find several different points of interest, rather than just one historic building.

About one kilometre east of Marczyce, on the summit of Góra Grodna, stands the Neo-Gothic Zamek Księcia Henryka. The observation tower, built in 1806 by Count Henryk XXXVIII Reuß zu Köstritz, has battlements. It is outside the village, so it should be considered a nearby destination, not a building in the village.
