What historic buildings and exhibitions are there?

The St. Gotthard Rotunda offers an early point of reference in the history of Silesian architecture: it was built in the 12th century. Another historic landmark is the Gothic Chapel of St. George at the hospital. It dates from 1351 and was built within the former municipal hospital complex. Since 1993, it has housed Galeria Skalna, which is managed by the Strzeliński Ośrodek Kultury cultural institution.

The Powder Tower also recalls the former city fortifications. Built in the 15th century on a rectangular ground plan, it is approximately 15 metres high. In Strzelin, it is the only tower of the former fortifications that has survived to this day. The Town Hall Tower offers a different point of interest: it is more than 70 metres high. It houses a mineral exhibition and a permanent exhibition featuring photographs of Strzelin before the war.

City games also explore historical themes. One game leads from the Market Square through a former city gate; another focuses on a Nobel laureate associated with Strzelin. A Historic Trail is also planned. It is to include eight brass figures of historical figures, set on granite stones connected with the city’s history. This planned project is distinct from the buildings and exhibitions described above.

Where can you enjoy the views and landscape?

The old water tower on the slope of Góra Szańcowa is currently used as an observation tower. From there, the view takes in several clearly named landscape features: the Strzelińskie Hills, the Ślęża Massif, and part of the Silesian Lowland. This offers a different way to explore the area than visiting Strzelin’s buildings and exhibitions.

Another defining feature is the granite quarry on Kamienna Street. Granite is actively extracted there; the quarry is considered the deepest open-pit mine in Europe and the second deepest in the world. Another leisure option is the Granit Aquapark in Strzelin: its swimming pool measures 25.00 × 12.50 metres, and there is also a leisure pool with numerous water massage stations.
