Biłgoraj – Culture, Hiking Trails and Zalew Bojary

The city lies on a flat area of the Sandomierz Basin covered with pine forests, at the foot of Roztocze and close to the Tanew Valley. Several hiking and cycling trails pass through Biłgoraj. Cultural attractions include the Muzeum Ziemi Biłgorajskiej and historic buildings; Zalew Bojary has sunbathing areas, a pier and fishing spots, among other amenities.

The Zespół Młyński stands on the Biała Łada and dates back to the mid-19th century. The mill complex includes a listed granary from the 19th century and a miller's house, also dating from that century. The miller's house was moved from Ogrodowa Street in Biłgoraj to the complex grounds. The different buildings make the complex a destination in its own right for travelers interested in historic architecture and working life.

Visiting hours vary by season: from May to October, the Zespół Młyński is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 16:30; it is closed from November to the end of April. The Zagroda Sitarska in Biłgoraj also dates back to the 19th century. Together with the mill complex, it offers another historic landmark within the city.

The Muzeum Ziemi Biłgorajskiej preserves more than 10,000 objects relating to archaeology, ethnography, history, military affairs, numismatics and art. Permanent and temporary exhibitions make the collections accessible. The permanent exhibition “Nad Tanwią i Ładą” explores the history of Biłgoraj and its surroundings. It offers a broad overview of different subjects alongside an exhibition that focuses specifically on the city and its surroundings.

The Roztocze hiking trail runs from the Biłgoraj Plain through Western Roztocze to Zwierzyniec; Biłgoraj lies along the way. The yellow Roztocze hiking trail passes through the city and the municipalities of Biłgoraj, Tereszpol, Radecznica and Zwierzyniec. These two trail descriptions offer different geographical perspectives on the hiking area. Marked hiking and cycling trails also run wholly or partly through Biłgoraj County.

The blue trail through the Solska Forest offers a different landscape, connecting Biłgoraj with Górecko Kościelne. Beyond its initial section in the city, it runs through the forests of the Solska Forest. When choosing a hiking route, you can therefore distinguish between a trail through Western Roztocze and one that includes stretches through the Solska Forest.

Cyclists can also choose from several named routes. The blue Biłgoraj–Osuchy cycling route is 38 km long; much of it runs through the Tanew Valley. The route passes through the city of Biłgoraj and the municipalities of Biłgoraj, Księżpol and Łukowa. The Eastern Green Velo cycling route also passes through Biłgoraj. Watercraft can be rented at Zalew Bojary, including kayaks and bicycles. The amenities described also include sunbathing areas, a pier and fishing spots.
