Osno Lubuskie at a glance
The surviving ring of granite and brick walls forms the main part of the medieval fortification system. At the center of the old town’s layout are St. James’s Church and the Town Hall immediately to its east. Lake Reczynek, with a municipal bathing area, lies in the north of the town.
What can you discover along the city walls?
The defensive walls are up to 6 meters high. They were topped with brick crenellations, which could be reached from the ramparts on the inner side. Loopholes were located at the level of these ramparts. These features make the fortifications understandable as a connected system: the wall, rampart and loopholes were directly linked.
The surviving structures include two round towers, three full-height rectangular half-towers, including their roofs, and seven rectangular half-towers without roofs. There are also seven gates. Anyone interested in medieval architecture can appreciate the variety of the fortification by looking at these different structures, rather than viewing the city walls only as one continuous ring.
Which buildings define the old town?
St. James’s Church stands on a small rise at the center of the old town’s layout. It is considered an especially valuable and impressive example of Gothic architecture and has preserved its form well. Among its most valuable furnishings are a Mannerist high altar, a pulpit and a baptismal font. The church thus offers points of interest in both architecture and art history.
The restored Town Hall is considered one of the town’s most valuable monuments and an important part of its local cultural heritage. The Muzeum Ziemi Torzymskiej is located in the historic Town Hall. Northwest of the old town, the Chapel of St. Gertrude stands on a rise. It was built around the middle of the 15th century on the site of an older half-timbered building. The small brick building has a single-nave, single-room hall and an east end closed on three sides.
What does Lake Reczynek offer?
Lake Reczynek lies within the town limits to the north; the municipal bathing area is located there. Kayaks and pedal boats are available for hire at the bathing area. Nearby, there is also a recreation center with water sports equipment rentals, a campsite, a small sports field and a playground. These activities offer a different focus from a visit to the old town: Reczynek is all about swimming and leisure by the water.
