Discover Wieliszew

Wieliszew sits on a slope above Lake Wieliszewskie. The Zegrze Reservoir has a beach and a paved route closed to cars. Cycling, inline skating and horse riding are among the activities described; historic sites include a Neoclassical chapel and a military cemetery.

Lake Wieliszewskie is a remnant of a former meander of the Narew—a bend in the river that once formed part of its course. Wieliszew lies on the slope above the lake. From there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the water and the meadows below.

The beach in Wieliszew was modernized in 2013. Facilities there include barbecue areas, a playground, a pier and toilets. If you need a particular facility during your visit, check its current status in advance.

Sports and cultural events are also held at the beach. These include the Amatorskie Mistrzostwa Zalewu Zegrzyńskiego w Siatkówce Plażowej. The cultural program includes film screenings, concerts, children’s events and family competitions, as well as the Wieliszewski Festiwal Folkowo-Szantowy „Szanty nad Zalewem“. It also features qualifying rounds for the Złoty Pagaj competition and the children’s game „Bezpieczeństwo nad Jeziorem Zegrzyńskim“ with the mascots Kapitan Wyderki from the Komisariat Rzeczny Policji. Event programs may change, so check the dates if a particular event is important to your trip.

At the Zegrze Reservoir, a one-kilometer paved route runs through Wieliszew and is closed to cars. It is used by many cyclists and inline skaters. The area around Lake Wieliszewskie can also be explored by bicycle or on horseback; there is a horse farm right by the lake.

Another landmark is the observation tower near the Parish of the Transfiguration.

A large Neoclassical chapel bearing the inscription „Żona Mężowi“ stands in the cemetery. It was donated in 1834 by Maria Gautier, the wife of the then owner of the village and estate of Wieliszew.

The same cemetery also contains a military cemetery. About 300 Polish soldiers are buried there, mostly members of the 5th Infantry Division. They defended the crossing over the Narew in September 1939. On July 20, 1387, the Bishop of Płock, Ścibor of Radzymin, ordered a church to be built in Wieliszew on the lands of the Canons Regular of Czerwińsk nad Wisłą.
