Głubczyce

The town hall was built in 1570 using building elements from a 14th-century merchant’s house and was rebuilt in 2006–2008 after its destruction during the Second World War. The Franciscan church and monastery complex was built between 1753 and 1770 to a design by Jan Innocenty Töpper of Prudnik. It comprises a Baroque church and a four-wing monastery arranged in a square around an inner courtyard.

Other historic buildings can be found in nearby towns. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Opawica was built between 1701 and 1706 and is a Class “O” monument. The Church of St John the Baptist in Chomiąża dates from 1575. In Grobniki, the castle dates back to the 16th century and was remodelled in the 19th century; the Chapel of St Barbara dates from 1701.

A spring well is located beside the Chapel of St Barbara in Grobniki. According to local tradition, it has been credited with miraculous powers since the 17th century. Until the end of the Second World War, it was one of the larger pilgrimage sites in Silesia. This historical connection adds to the architectural history the religious significance once attributed to the site.

The Mokre–Lewice protected landscape area covers 6,527 ha, including part of the Opawskie Mountains, gorges and the river valleys of the Troja, Osobłoga and Opawica. Rare and protected plants grow there, and the area also provides a refuge for protected animals. The landscape here therefore includes a variety of features, not just a single river landscape.

A three-row lime tree avenue, designated a natural monument, connects the municipal forest with Głubczyce. Głubczycki Forest is important for tourism and recreation. These features offer a nature and recreation angle alongside the historic buildings.
