In Szemud, the green Route No. 31 completes its 4.6 km loop. Geographical location
Szemud is located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, in Wejherowo County and Szemud Gmina. The town lies on the S6 expressway and Voivodeship Road 224. Szemud is the seat of Szemud Gmina and of the Roman Catholic parish belonging to the Kielno Deanery and the Archdiocese of Gdańsk.
Culture and history
The parish of Saint Nicholas in Szemud is documented as early as the 14th century; before 1370, there was a chapel on the road leading to the cemetery. The present brick Church of Saint Nicholas replaced an older half-timbered church in the 1920s. The interior still contains partially preserved Baroque paintings depicting Saint Nicholas and Our Lady of the Rosary. The Church of Saint Nicholas also houses a monstrance with a radiating aureole from the second half of the 18th century.
In the surrounding area, Szemud Gmina cultivates Kashubian culture, customs and traditions. The Remus Regional Chamber in Łebno has around 1,000 exhibits from fields including art, archaeology, ethnography, history, military affairs, numismatics, technology and nature; it is closed until further notice due to a comprehensive renovation of the building.
On the way
The green Route No. 32 in Szemud starts at a car park near Lake Okuniewo. After 500 metres, it offers a view of Lake Okuniewo and then reaches the historic cobbled trunk road Via Regia, also known as the Royal Road or “kocie łby”.
The red Route No. 33 starts at a car park on Lake Czarne. Most of the route runs along unpaved roads and forest tracks. It crosses Road 224 before entering the forest.
Nature
The black Route No. 34 in Szemud is a nearly 19 km-long loop and takes about three hours. It passes through the Trójmiasto Landscape Park and into a nature reserve. In the surrounding area of Szemud Gmina, agricultural land, forests and lakes shape the rural character of the region.
