What does the Old Town tell us about Opatów?
Brama Warszawska is a striking testament to the town’s history. It is the only one of Opatów’s four historic town gates to have survived. The stone gate was built on a square plan between 1520 and 1530. Nearby, the surviving medieval layout of the market square offers a different perspective on the town’s history: rather than focusing on a single structure, it reveals the arrangement of the square in the Old Town.
The history of the Bernardine complex spans different periods, too. The complex’s first wooden church was built in 1040 on the site of the settlement of Żmigród at the time. The present-day Bernardine Church of the Assumption of Mary, by contrast, is a single-nave late Baroque building made of stone and, in part, brick. These buildings offer a way to distinguish the early history of the settlement from later architectural styles.
Which churches and works of art define the town?
The Collegiate Church of St Martin is a Romanesque building whose appearance has been shaped by later alterations, as well as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque details. In the left side of the transept, one of two reliefs can be found at the tomb of Chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki: the Lament of Opatów. The bas-relief slab depicts 40 figures mourning the chancellor’s death. The work brings together a specific scene and the place where the tomb stands in the church.
The Bernardine monastery complex in Opatów is late Baroque. Its Rococo high altar was created by Maciej Polejowski between 1770 and 1775. The Bernardine church and monastery are surrounded by a restored wall, which is partly reinforced by buttresses and features loopholes. In the associated parish, the Collegiate Church of St Martin complex in Opatów was declared a Pomnik Historii (Monument of History) by order of the President of the Republic of Poland on 2 February 2023.
What can you discover at the museum?
The Museum of Geodesy and Cartography is devoted to surveying and cartography before the digital era. Its collection includes nearly 1,000 exhibits, among them an extensive collection of cadastral maps. It offers a distinct perspective on the history of surveying and the representation of land and boundaries.
The collection is presented in multimedia-equipped rooms. The exhibition also includes an office of a licensed surveyor furnished in retro style. Maps, instruments and the office furnishings offer different points of focus: they showcase both the tools of the trade and a fully furnished workplace.
How can you explore the region by bike?

Across Powiat opatowski as a whole, conditions in most areas are suitable for hiking and cycling; this applies to the county.
Road connections can also help with travel planning, without implying a specific journey time: Opatów lies at the junction of National Roads 9, from Radom to Barwinek, and 74, from Sulejów to Hrubieszów. If you are looking for a hotel, you could first consider whether churches, the town’s history or a cycling trip will be the focus of your visit.
