Dzwirzyno by the Sea: Beach, Dunes and Water Sports
Accommodation in Dzwirzyno
Dzwirzyno combines a wide sandy beach with a dune landscape, natural features and a variety of activities on the water. Which aspect of the town you would like to explore depends on whether you are more interested in the beach and sea views, water sports or protected nature.
Dzwirzyno at a glance
Dzwirzyno’s wide, sandy coastal beach lies several kilometres west of Kołobrzeg. On the landward side, it is bordered by dunes with pine forest. Both the open stretch of sand and the wooded edge of the dunes shape the landscape. A modern viewing terrace on the beach offers views of the Baltic Sea and sunsets. From there, you can see the sea without going down to the beach.
Lake Resko and the harbour are also places for activities on the water. The Bór wrzoścowy ecological reserve lies to the northeast. Protected buildings and natural landmarks add cultural and natural attractions to the beach and water experiences.
What water-based activities are available?
The Błękitna Marina on Lake Resko offers opportunities for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is considered one of the most modern facilities in Pomerania. Those who want to focus on water sports will find a different emphasis here than at the seaside harbour. The two offer different ways to experience the water.
Dzwirzyno’s former fishing harbour is now a fishing and tourism harbour. It is suitable for coastal sailing, fishing trips and sea excursions in small boats. The Water Tourism and Recreation Centre rents out SUP boards, kayaks and pedal boats during the summer season. Its offerings also include small sailboats of the Optymist, Eikplast and Omega types. If you are comparing different activities, you can consider these specific options: sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, paddling, pedal boating or taking a trip in a small boat.
For a beachside stay, the viewing terrace offers a different perspective from the beach itself: it is a place for walks and a stopping point for cyclists. You can enjoy views of the Baltic Sea and sunsets there without going down to the beach. This is a separate option if you are looking for sea views but do not want to walk along the beach or spend time on the sand.
What natural features shape the area?
Bór wrzoścowy is an ecological reserve in the northeast of Dzwirzyno. It covers an approximately two-hectare coastal bog woodland habitat in a shallow dune hollow. This habitat is unique on the Polish coast and is associated with coastal crowberry pine forests. The combination of a dune hollow, bog woodland and adjoining forest types distinguishes this reserve from the open beach landscape.
Another special feature is the “Patelnia” shifting dune. It is located behind the “Havet” and “Geovita” hotels and moves about two metres northeast each year. This figure describes an approximate annual movement, making clear that it is a shifting dune rather than a fixed one.
A group of 16 pedunculate oaks on Wyzwolenia Street is protected. Their trunk circumferences range from 125 to 250 centimetres. These trees are another protected natural feature in the area, alongside the approximately two-hectare Bór wrzoścowy reserve and the Patelnia shifting dune.
What is there to discover beyond the beach and nature?
The former Elisabeth Seehospitz, now “Bałtyk”, is one of the oldest of the 22 listed buildings in Dzwirzyno. It provides a historical point of reference in a town whose landscape and leisure activities are strongly shaped by the water. If you would like to include protected architecture in your travel plans as well as the beach and activities, you can take this aspect into account.
