ArieÅŸeni: Winter, Waterfalls and Caves

Arieșeni is a destination for skiing and seasonal sports in winter. The Pârtia Vârtop I ski slope is 1,000 metres long and equipped with a drag lift and night lighting. Pârtia Vârtop II is considered a ski slope for beginners, with ski and snowboard instructors. Ski and snowboard equipment can be rented at the bottom station of Pârtia Vârtop II. Nature and Trails

The marked access route to Cascada Vârciorog leads from the centre of Arieșeni via the DN75 towards Vârtop, followed by three kilometres along the Vârciorog Valley on a trail marked with a yellow dot. Cascada Vârciorog is more than 15 metres high and lies in a coniferous forest at the foot of the Piatra Grăitoare peak in Arieșeni.

Cascada Pătrăhăițești is a 14-metre-high waterfall with two drops. Near Cascada Pătrăhăițești, there are two mini-museums that function as craft workshops and produce traditional wooden items such as tulnic trumpets, wooden vessels, bowls, wooden cups, salt containers and flutes.

Culture

The Muzeul Pătrăhăițești in the village of Pătrăhăițești in the municipality of Arieșeni displays several objects typical of Țara Moților. The Biserica „Înălțarea Domnului“ Arieșeni was built entirely of wood between 1791 and 1829 in the style of the churches of Maramureș. The church is classified as a historic monument and belongs to Romania’s national cultural heritage.

Caves and Mountains

Peștera Ghețarul Vârtop is also known as Peștera Minunată because of its numerous white limestone formations and is a natural monument. Peștera Coiba Mare has Romania’s largest cave entrance.

From Arieșeni, the route to Peștera Coiba Mare follows the DN75 to Gârda de Sus and then continues for approximately 12 kilometres on a local road to the village of Casa de Piatră; there, a sign indicates the descent to the cave.

With a maximum depth of 85 metres, Izbucul Tauz is considered the deepest known siphon in Romania. It brings to the surface water that has entered the ground through the Coiba Mare and Coiba Mică caves.

The Vârful Curcubata Mică peak is 1,769 metres high and offers a panorama of Arieșul Mare and Arieșul Mic.
