Brădetu between Monastic History and the Vâlsan Landscape

Brădetu combines a centuries-old monastic history with trails through the Vâlsan landscape. Monastic life at the site of today’s historic church is documented for the years 1395–1396; along the Vâlsan River, an 11 km route leads from Brădetu on a forest road to Poienile Vâlsanului.

Culture

The ensemble of the former Brădetu Skete comprises the “Înălțarea Domnului” Church, a bell tower, and an enclosing wall. The church has a single spire and is built of stone and brick. The old church was restored by the Direcția Monumentelor Istorice during the periods 1926–1929 and 1964–1967.

The old Brădetu Skete is considered a small princely monastic complex and a voivodal foundation under the direct attention of the voivodes of Wallachia.

The new Brădetu Skete lies on the ridge of Dealul Seci at an elevation of 750 m, at a bend in the Vâlsan River. From there, it offers panoramic views of Mount Ghițu, the Iezer Massif, Măgura Chiciura, the Vâlsan Gorge, and the center of Brădetu.

Pilgrims may be welcomed at the new Skete by a monk, accompanied to the church for prayer, and supported with information and spiritual guidance. A fragment of the relics of Saint Nektarios of Aegina is also kept there.

Nature and Trails

The route from Stațiunea Brădet to Vârful Moldoveanu through Valea Vâlsanului begins at the sanatorium in the center of Stațiunea Brădet and leads through the Cheile Vâlsanului.

A loop route starting and ending in Brădetu via Turburea, Berindești, Poenari, Arefu, Poiana Moliviș, Nucșoara, and Gruiu takes 5–6 hours. The different distances and time estimates help you compare the trails according to the time available.

One hiking trail is planned to take 8–9 hours; approximately half of the route runs uphill, and the blue-cross marking was still being prepared.

Stațiunea Brădetu is associated with the protected landscapes of Valea Vâlsanului, classified as a mixed nature reserve, particularly because of the fish species Romanythis Valsanicola, commonly known as asprete, which occurs in the Vâlsan River.

The Poienile Vâlsanului campsite near Brădetu lies in the Făgăraș Mountains; access is via Brădetu, the Cheile Vâlsanului, and DJ703I.

The Târgul de Sfântul Ilie is scheduled in Brădetu for July 20.
