Comuna Moșoaia – Archaeology, Churches and Landscape

In Comuna Moșoaia, the trail leads far back into the past: Bronze Age finds from the Tei culture were discovered at the Aşezarea de la Smeura - La Rogoaze settlement. These include pottery fragments, fragments of fired clay, a stone knife and a flint point; the site is dated to 1700–1400 BC.

Geographical setting

Comuna Moșoaia lies on the Cotmeana Platform. The elevation ranges from around 500 m in the north-northwest to 200 m in the southwest. National Road DN 67B crosses the area from northeast to west and connects Pitești with Drăgășani.

The Teleorman stream runs for 7.25 km through the territory of Comuna Moșoaia. Elevation levels, the road route and the course of the stream provide different spatial reference points and can be considered separately when planning.

Archaeology and history

Remains of a Geto-Dacian settlement dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD were also discovered at the same settlement, including pottery fragments and an iron knife. The Necropola de la Moşoaia - Pădurea Moşoii necropolis is dated from the late Hallstatt period to the early La Tène period and consists of five tumuli.

The largest tumulus in this necropolis has a diameter of approximately 25 m and is 3 m high. The necropolis is located at the entrance to MoÅŸoaia. The archaeological settlement AÅŸezarea de la Smeura - La Rogoaze is situated approximately 0.5 km south of DJ 703E and approximately 1.5 km north of DN 67B.

Churches and memorial sites

The Biserica Cuvioasa Paraschiva church lies in the valley of the Teleorman River, halfway between the village of Moşoaia and the village of Lăzăreşti. The Biserica Sfântul Nicolae church in Ciocănăi bears the monument number AG-II-m-A-13595.

The Biserica Cuvioasa Paraschiva church in Moșoaia bears the monument number AG-II-m-B-13746. The original oil painting in the church of Hințești was created by Gheorghe Stoenescu, who is identified in the inscription as a student of the renowned Romanian painter Gh. Tătărăscu. Votive frescoes of the founders and their families have also been preserved there.

The war memorial in Moșoaia bears the names of local heroes from the First and Second World Wars on white marble slabs. In the vicinity of Comuna Moșoaia are the Biserica Cuvioasa Parascheva, Biserica Hinţeşti, Biserica Cimitir Moşoaia and Biserica Dealu Viilor churches. The Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului church is located in Smeura.

Landscape

The immediate surroundings of Comuna Moșoaia include the hills of La Poieniţe, Dealul Viilor, Dealul Siru and Dealul Frasinului. Together with the variation in elevation within the Cotmeana Platform and the course of the Teleorman stream, they provide several clearly named landscape references for regional orientation.
