Beiuș – Churches, Markets and Routes in the Apuseni Mountains

Beiuș is considered the most important western starting point for the tourist areas of the Apuseni Mountains, including the Padiș karst plateau, the Bear Cave near Chișcău, Stâna de Vale and Vârtop–Arieșeni.

Nature and Regional Routes

The Drumul Apusenilor includes the 26.16-kilometre county road section DJ 764A between Beiuș and Stâna de Vale. The Bihor County section of the Drumul Apusenilor is 56.3 kilometres long in total and comprises three county road sections. The different length figures help to view the regional road route at different scales. In Bihor County, 11 hiking trails have been designated in the spa and holiday region of Stâna de Vale, and 27 hiking trails in the Padiș–Vârtop tourist area.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic church in Beiuș Central Park is the oldest of the city's churches that still exist today and was built in 1752. Biserica din deal was built in 1784 in place of a wooden chapel; the Baroque hall church has a single tower on the central axis. It is considered the oldest local place of worship in Beiuș.

The Reformed church of Parohia Episcopia reformată de pe lângă Piatra Craiului in Beiuș dates from 1780 to 1782. Beiuș's central church was built between 1786 and 1790 and held the status of a second church with cathedral rank in the Greek Catholic Diocese of Oradea. The Catedrala – Protopopiat Beiuș houses a repository containing 1,500 ecclesiastical objects.

Local Life and Events

The Thursday market in Beiuș is considered a centuries-old tradition among the residents of the Beiuș area. The market offers agricultural products and handicrafts from farmers and craftspeople from the Beiuș area.

The Târgul Meșterilor Populari takes place in April on the weekend closest to Saint George's Day on 23 April. It includes presentations of folk traditions and the participation of traditional-costume makers and other craftspeople from the region.

The “Cântă, cântă, gură scumpă” festival is held annually in November. It is a national festival featuring Romanian folk music performers and includes a folk singing competition. The Toamnă Beiușană Festival is an annual event held on the third weekend of October.
