Nucet: Hiking Trails, Groapa Ruginoasă and Culture

The Nucet area at the foot of the Munții Bihor offers numerous mountain hiking trails, from easy forest walks to challenging ascents to the highest peaks of the Apuseni Mountains. The varying lengths, durations and difficulty levels allow for a direct comparison of the trail profiles.

Trails

The difficult Şaua Vârtop–Vârful Cucurbăta Mare hiking trail is 14 km long as a circular route, takes 6–7 hours, reaches an altitude of 1,849 m and is marked with a red bar. The moderately difficult Băița–Şaua Vârtop hiking trail is 11 km long, takes 4–5 hours and is marked with a blue triangle. An easy 5 km hiking trail leads to Groapa Ruginoasă and takes 2–3 hours; it is marked with a yellow cross. The three distance and time details make the differences between a shorter tour and longer hikes immediately apparent. To classify the tours, the details can be read together: the distance describes the scope, the duration the time frame, the altitude the point reached and the marking the respective trail sign. Nature

The Nucet–Vârtop tourist area lies partly within Parcul Natural Apuseni. Groapa Ruginoasă is an erosion-formed gully with red-violet quartzite layers and a gorge-like shape. The eroded area covers approximately 20 ha; the gully is more than 600 m wide and over 100 m deep. Peştera Porţile Bihorului cave is located in the settlement of Băiţa, which belongs to the city of Nucet, in the Bihor Mountains of the Western Carpathians and within Parcul Național Apuseni.

Activities

There are five officially approved tourist hiking trails in Satul de Vacanță Vârtop. Satul de Vacanță Vârtop has ski slopes for winter sports. Vârtop also has the Pietrele Negre via ferrata, with difficulty level B. Satul de Vacanță Vârtop in Nucet was designated a holiday resort of local tourist interest under Government Decision No. 120/2024, published in Official Gazette No. 144 of 22 February 2024.

Geographical Location

National road DN 75 passes through Nucet, Băița and Vârtop and connects Ștei with Turda.

Culture

Băița has been documented since the 13th century. The Casa de Cultură „Ion Davideanu“ cultural centre in Nucet was built in the Soviet architectural style in the 1950s, renovated and completed in 2011. Empress Maria Theresa is said to have selected the site and commissioned the construction of the Roman Catholic church in Băița.
