Costinești between Church Construction and Local History
Costinești combines a clearly dated history of church construction with written records of the settlement and an archaeological indication of a much older period of settlement. At the center is the church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil,” whose construction in hewn stone began in 1941. It was completed in 1963 and consecrated on December 6. The long construction period and the year of consecration are just as much a part of its history as its furnishings and the memorial items from an older house of worship. The church building connects the beginning of construction in 1941 with furnishings whose individual components originate from significantly older ecclesiastical contexts.
Culture
The iconostasis of the church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” was brought from a church in Stulpicani and made in 1853. An earlier church in the village of Costinești was destroyed by fire in 1886. From this earlier wooden church, the present-day church preserves, among other things, a “Penticostal” from 1800 and a Gospel from 1806. Costinești is also home to the parish “Sfinții Voievozi Mihail și Gavriil.”
The years associated with the construction, the iconostasis and the preserved ecclesiastical objects span several generations.
History
The earliest documented mention of Costinești dates from June 6, 1617. In a document from 1620, Costinești is listed under the name “Șarba.” The present name is derived from the personal name Costin. Who Costin was and when he lived cannot be determined more precisely.
Archaeology
In the area of Costinești, N. Beldiceanu and Gr. Butureanu discovered a settlement between 1892 and 1895 at an unspecified find site, which presumably belonged to the Cucuteni culture. The find site has not been more precisely identified; its attribution to the Cucuteni culture remains explicitly a presumption. The archaeological trace reaches significantly further back in time than the written mention of the settlement.

Landscape
The western and northern sides of Costinești are bordered by the right bank of the Bucecea stream. On these two sides, the stream forms a concrete spatial boundary of the settlement. Geographical Location
