Mesteacăn: Church, Chapel and Historical Traces

Mesteacăn’s history becomes particularly tangible through that of Parohia Mesteacăn. It was founded on July 12, 1998, when the foundation stone for the future church was laid. The interior of the Parohia Mesteacăn church was painted between 2005 and 2009 using the “a seco” technique. The church was consecrated on August 23, 2009. The church complex thus combines a clearly dated founding with several years of interior painting and the subsequent consecration.

Culture

The local church history also includes the “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” chapel; it was built when the village was founded. The patronal feast of Parohia Mesteacăn is “Intrarea Domnului în Ierusalim” and is considered unique in the Botoșani Deanery. The church is located on the road toward Vorona. In August 2009, both the social center and the “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” chapel were consecrated in the Parohia Mesteacăn complex. In this context, the parish church is therefore joined by the older chapel and the social center as independent components of the complex.

History

A different kind of trace is the “Movila Schit Orăşeni de la Mesteacăn.” It is a burial mound located outside the settlement area, in the Sarafineşti forest. The burial mound lies on the left side of the Fălticeni–Botoşani national road, 900 meters south-southwest of the forestry station. Its name and location point to a place outside the village area, clearly distinguishing this historical trace from the church complex in the village.

Geographical Location

Mesteacăn is connected to Botoşani by the Sarafineşti–Mesteacăn–Orăşeni Deal–Botoşani road; this connection is used by the residents of Mesteacăn and Sarafineşti. Mesteacăn is also located two kilometers before the entrance to Vorona commune. The location details thus refer both to the connection toward Botoşani and to the separate position before the entrance to Vorona commune.

During a pilgrimage on foot to Vorona Monastery, the village of Mesteacăn was one of the final stops.
