Geographical Setting
The Valea Dobârlăului lies at the northern foot of the Munții Întorsurii Buzăului, in the upper valley of the Dobârlău stream. The Pârâul Finișoara is a tributary of the Râul Tărlung.
Nature
Forests and pastureland are the predominant vegetation types in Comuna Dobârlău. Typical mountain forest fauna in the region includes red deer, bears, lynxes, foxes, wolves, wild boars and falcons.
Culture and History
At the “Cetatea lui Barabas” archaeological site, an earthen rampart is located beside a stream. Mărcuș has been documented since 1505. The place name Dobârlău is said to derive from the shepherd Dobre, who settled here around 1500 as one of the first inhabitants.
Mărcuș Monastery bears the two patronal dedications “Sfinții Români” and “Acoperământul Maicii Domnului”. It was built on the site of an old hermitage destroyed around 1700. Dobârlău is home to the “Muzeul Etnografic Maria”.
Traditions
The folk traditions of Valea Dobârlăului include Christmas caroling and New Year celebrations. As part of the pastoral tradition in Mărcuș, six kilograms of Brânză de burduf and one kilogram of Urdă were given for each sheep that was milked.
In Mărcuș and Lunca Mărcușului, sheep were brought together around the Easter holidays and tended until 1 December or until the first snow, respectively.
Hiking
The hiking trail marked PA connects Dobârlău with Vârful Pilişca, the highest point in the Munții Întorsurii. The trail reaches Vârful Pilişca at an elevation of 1,222 metres. This hiking trail offers views of Valea Dobârlăului and the ridge between Dobârlău and Teliu.
Transport
County road DJ103B crosses Comuna Dobârlău. The county road has been modernised along its entire length through the commune.
