Bolovani: Nature, History and Landscape

Bolovani combines a clearly defined natural area with a historic building and distinctive transport connections. In the southwest of the territory of the municipality of Cornățelu lies the Bolovani Hunting Reserve, a four-star nature reserve with a hunting focus. Among other species, wild boars, red deer, roe deer, pheasants and hares are found there. The Bolovani Hunting Reserve is designated as a protected nature area; the church, bodies of water and roads provide additional independent points of reference.

Culture and History

The “Sf. Nicolae” Church (“Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, “Sf. Voievozi”), located in Bolovani, dates from 1835 and is registered as a historic monument under code DB-II-m-B-17360.

Nature and Bodies of Water

The Ilfov stream runs through Bolovani and also through the Bolovani Hunting Reserve. Another water-related reference is the Colentina: in summer, it does not carry water continuously within the hunting reserve, but is more of a marshy area than a flowing watercourse. The river also bears the name “Valea Moartă”.

The Bolovani Hunting Reserve is home to various species of centuries-old oaks belonging to the ancient forests of Vlăsia. The reserve is therefore located in an environment where old oak stands, the Ilfov stream, the seasonally characterized section of the Colentina and the aforementioned wildlife occur in the same area.

For classifying the bodies of water, the distinction between the Ilfov stream, which runs through the area, and the section of the Colentina that does not carry water continuously in summer is essential. The name “Valea Moartă” also belongs to the designation of the Colentina and does not refer to another river.

Geographical Location

Bolovani is a compact lowland settlement that developed at the intersection of DJ 701 and DC 53A. The DJ 701 road passes through Bolovani and, on this section, runs between Moara Nouă, Cornățelu and Dobra. The DC 53A road connects Bolovani with Crângăși and the DJ 711 road.

The two transport routes describe different relationships of the locality: DJ 701 is identified through the sequence Moara Nouă, Cornățelu and Dobra, while DC 53A denotes the connection to Crângăși and DJ 711. This makes it possible to follow the stated place references separately.

Other Local References

There is an artificial reservoir with tourism potential in the vicinity of the Bolovani Hunting Reserve, particularly for sport fishing. The village festival “Fii satului Bolovani” was scheduled for the last Saturday in May.

The reservoir adds an artificially created body of water to the local water-related references. The village festival, in turn, provides a time-specific cultural reference: it was not scheduled generally in May, but specifically on the last Saturday of that month.

For Bolovani, hotel offerings can be assessed based on travel dates, room category and cancellation policies. This information can be considered alongside the specific local references to the nature reserve, church, bodies of water and transport routes.
