Malu Mare: History, Culture and Nature
Malu Mare combines local history, religious architecture, commemorative culture and a protected nature reserve.
History and Memorial Sites
Malu Mare has a history spanning more than 500 years and was first documented in 1494. The settlement was originally called Ciulniţa.
Because of frequent flooding, Malu Mare was relocated from the Jiu lowlands on the left bank of the river to higher ground on the Jiu. The change in settlement location is therefore closely connected with the Jiu area and its varying elevations.
A memorial monument for the inhabitants of Malu Mare stands in the centre of the village. It commemorates people who participated in or fought in the War of Independence in 1877, the Peasants' Revolt in 1907 and the war for national unification from 1916 to 1918. For those interested in culture, the monument is a tangible memorial site in the centre of Malu Mare.
Churches and Historic Complexes
In Preajba stands the Biserica Sf. Åžtefan ÅŸi Sf. Gheorghe, a historic monument of religious architecture from the 17th century. The church was endowed by Hagi Stan Jianu in 1779.
The Biserica Sf. Gheorghe still preserves interior wall paintings in the Brâncovenesc tradition. It also houses religious books and icons from the 19th century, as well as original columns made in the 18th century.
The foundation in 1779 supplements the dating of the church's construction to the 17th century with a specific historical year. The furnishings range from the columns made in the 18th century to the books and icons from the 19th century.
The Ansamblul curţii boiereşti Jieni is located in the Comuna Malu Mare and is dated to the 16th century. Its dating therefore predates that of the church in Preajba.
Protected Nature Reserve
The protected natural area Complexul lacustru Preajba-Făcăi is located within the territory of the Comuna Malu Mare and its immediate surroundings.
Transport and Practical Orientation
National Road 55 crosses the Comuna Malu Mare and connects it with other places in the region. This means that a regional road connection is available directly within the commune for travel planning.
The Comuna Malu Mare also has its own railway station. The road and railway station therefore represent two different types of transport infrastructure within the commune.
