Nature

The ROSCI0045 “Coridorul Jiului” Natura 2000 site extends along the lower Jiu and was designated in 2007 by an ordinance of the Minister of the Environment. An educational thematic nature trail has been established in the Pădurea Zăval nature reserve. Parcul Nicolae Romanescu covers approximately 90 hectares and is described as Romania’s largest urban green space. The Botanical Garden in Craiova covers 17 hectares; its museum contains seed and fruit specimens, display panels, graphics, diplomas and catalogue collections. The Craiova Zoo opened in 1906 and is described as one of Romania’s oldest zoos. It houses 39 species, with a total of 244 birds and animals. Lacul Bistreț serves as a refuge for birds migrating along the Danube. It covers 1,936 hectares and is considered a reference area for the protection of migratory birds. In 2007, it was granted the status of a special protection area for birds, and in 2012 the status of a Ramsar site.

The different scales of the natural sites mentioned help when comparing the park, garden and lake.

Culture and History

The Muzeul Olteniei Craiova was founded on 1 April 1915 and operates four buildings with the departments of history and archaeology, natural sciences, and ethnography, as well as a restoration and conservation laboratory. The design of Parcul Nicolae Romanescu was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1900.

Cula Cernăteștilor was converted into a museum in 1972 and houses evidence of the local past. In the settlement of Cula Cernăteștilor, the first fortified building was erected in 1600 by the merchant Dimitrie Cernat. The Palatul Marincu in Calafat was built between 1905 and 1907 by Ștefan Marincu in memory of his daughter Marioara Marincu; the plans were drawn up by Paul Gottereau, and the construction work was supervised by Constantin Rogalski. The Palatul Marincu combines French Neoclassicism with Baroque and Rococo accents, as well as influences from early 20th-century Romanian architecture.

Cula Izvoranu-Geblescu probably dates from the second half of the 18th century and is listed as open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; it is closed on Mondays. The Casa Memorială Amza Pellea in Băilești was opened to the public on 7 April 2024. It presents an exhibition commemorating the actor Amza Pellea, featuring objects donated by his daughter, actress Oana Pellea. In 2016, the Dolj County Council decided to establish the county’s first tourist route under the title “Istorie și tradiție doljeană”.
