Rojiște: Architectural History, the Jiu and Rural Life

Culture and History

In the locality of Rojiște is the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church, which is listed as an architectural monument dating from 1780. Approximately 600 metres south of the exit from Rojiște lies the “Situl arheologic de la Rojişte - Oaga Vijoii” archaeological site, on the right-hand side of the Craiova–Bechet road (DN55), on the upper terrace of the Jiu floodplain. In the village of Tîmburești in Rojiște commune is the “Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” Church; it is an architectural monument from the early 19th century. The dates therefore range from a specific year of construction through an early century to an archaeological site. The places mentioned are situated in different spatial contexts: the church in Rojiște is located in the locality, the archaeological site south of the exit from the locality, and the second church in the village of Tîmburești.

Geographical Location

National road DN55 runs through Rojiște and connects Craiova with the Danube port of Bechet. Within Rojiște commune, the same national road connects the villages of Rojiște and Tîmburești. The two details place the road once in an intermunicipal context and once within the commune. For a spatial interpretation, it is therefore necessary to distinguish between the connection to Craiova and Bechet and the section within the commune leading to Tîmburești. Rojiște thus appears both as a locality on an intermunicipal connection and as part of a smaller communal transport area.

Rice cultivation resumed in Dolj County in 2018; a total of 151 hectares were planted with rice in Rojiște and Măceșu de Jos. Crop cultivation, livestock farming and trade represent different economic connections alongside the dated reference to rice cultivation.
