Siculeni: Memory, Nature and Regional Traditions

Culture and History

The Zöld-Péter School is listed in the register of monuments for Siculeni under house number 225. The building was constructed in 1885 and represents the introduction of regular schooling in Siculeni. The cultural sites mentioned can be distinguished according to their commemorative function, religious dedication and connection to education.

The Siculicidium Monument commemorates the massacre of January 7, 1764, in which Austrian imperial troops killed more than 200 Szekler martyrs. In Siculeni, it is listed in the Harghita County monument register as a historic monument; it was inaugurated on October 8, 1905.

The Jézus Szíve Church was consecrated in 1923 in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Siculicidium Chapel was consecrated in summer 2017.

Festivals and Crafts

The Siculicidium commemoration takes place every year on January 7 in Siculeni. The annual “Thousand Szekler Girls” gathering takes place on July 4 in Siculeni and celebrates the traditional dress, customs and traditions of the Hungarians in central Transylvania.

The Onion Festival is an annual event in Siculeni. The Onion Trail is the annual centerpiece of the Onion Festival on Saturday and includes six stations offering food, wine and music.

Traditional crafts associated with Siculeni include wood carving and the production of traditional Szekler gates. Kürtőskalács is considered the best-known dessert in the area around Siculeni.

Nature and Landscape

Siculeni has 1,270 hectares of forest. The municipality’s area encompasses different types of landscape: depressions, hills and mountains with extensive forests and natural meadows, as well as mineral resources. These landforms are located at elevations of 550 to 800 m.

The municipality of Siculeni has an exceptionally species-rich flora and fauna of outstanding scientific value; its biodiversity attracts many tourists. A forest museum was developed in Siculeni as part of a program to promote tourism.

The main route of the Siculicidium commemorative hike is approximately 15 km long and has an elevation gain of 530 m.
