Sândominic: Márton Áron Museum and Horseback Riding Tour

Sândominic combines church history with insights into rural and crafts-based life. The Márton Áron Museum honours Bishop Márton Áron and presents his life and legacy in an interactive exhibition. Educational activities for young people focus on the 20th century as well as the life and teachings of the bishop. In addition to the exhibition, age-appropriate educational programmes on biography and contemporary history are therefore available.

The Sândominic Village Museum Collection features a permanent exhibition in three halls. On display are tools and equipment used for storing provisions, cultivation, woodworking, logging and weaving. The collection thus leads visitors through various aspects of former everyday life and work: from storing provisions and agriculture to activities involving wood and textiles.

The farmhouse at the Sândominic Village Museum Collection was built in 1774. In addition to the collection’s cultural centre, there is also another furnished farmhouse. The historic building fabric and the tools and equipment on display thus form different parts of the cultural visit: one conveys the setting of former domestic life, while the other presents specific tools and equipment.

The Márton Áron Pilgrimage and Visitor Centre looks after pilgrims and tourists, provides information and offers a place to rest. The same centre also provides space for programmes and temporary exhibitions of the Márton Áron Museum. Information, assistance, a place to rest and changing museum offerings are thus brought together at a single point of contact.

When planning a museum visit, current opening hours and the dates of programmes or temporary exhibitions can be checked in advance. This is particularly useful for events held at fixed times; the exhibition and the educational activities are different types of museum programme.

Hășmașul Mare can also be accessed from Bălan. Bălan lies north of Sândominic, and the access route runs via the DN12. When planning a journey along this connection, current road conditions and traffic information can be checked before departure.

A horse-drawn carriage ride starts in Sândominic and leads to a sheepfold. There, visitors can taste fresh Cașcaval and sweet Urdă. The horseback riding tour follows the Sândominic–Pásztorbükk–Luka reze route and also includes a visit to a sheepfold at midday, as well as a cheese and Urdă tasting.

The two offerings lead to a sheepfold with regional products in different ways: the horse-drawn carriage ride focuses on the journey by horse-drawn carriage, while the horseback riding tour follows a set route. Prior registration is required for the horseback riding tours; booking three to four days before the planned date is recommended. The horseback riding tour is recommended for experienced riders.
