Kalan Accommodation: Aquae, Churches and Thermal Baths
Aquae is an archaeological site from the Roman period in Călan.
Culture
The Church of Saint George in Streisîngiorgiu is a Romanesque stone church dating from the fourth decade of the 12th century; it was preceded by a wooden structure from the 11th to 12th century. The oldest surviving layer of wall paintings in this church dates from 1313–1314 and is attributed to Teofil Zugravul.
The Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Strei is a stone court church built in the 13th century. Fragments of the exterior paintings from the 14th century are still faintly visible on the eastern apse and the southern façade of the church in Strei. The Church of Saint George in Streisîngiorgiu lies on the European Cultural Route for Romanesque Architectural Heritage.
In Streisîngiorgiu, the building form, preceding structure and attributed layer of wall paintings are therefore the main focus, while in Strei the court church and faintly visible fragments of exterior paintings define the historical evidence. The churches can thus be viewed on the basis of their different surviving features.
Water
The Roman basin of Aquae is carved into the rock, measures 7 × 14 metres and is approximately 3.60–4 metres deep. The thermomineral water of the Aquae thermal baths comes from 4371 H and is used in five pools, one of which is covered; the water temperature is 27–29 °C.
At Aquae, two types of information stand side by side. When planning a visit, you can weigh the archaeological dimension and the bathing theme separately, rather than deriving a unified character of the visit from both. For travel groups with different interests, the priorities can be arranged according to their own preferences.
Landscape
The Măgura Călanului archaeological quarry lies in the Strei Valley, a few kilometres from Călan, and is largely hidden by forest; as an ancient quarry, it supplied limestone blocks for the Dacian fortresses in the Orăştie Mountains.
The road route in Hunedoara County begins in Călan and leads to Ludești.
When choosing accommodation in Kalan, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can structure the practical comparison. Historical, archaeological and landscape themes form independent areas of focus that can be weighted differently depending on the travel plan. The travel dates can be compared with the planned focus. For a culturally oriented stay, the information about the churches can be considered separately from the details about room category and cancellation conditions.
Geographical setting
