Maia: Church, Estate History and Natural Monuments

Maia combines a sacred building, family history and an underground crypt at a historic church site. The Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului” cu Cavoul lui Barbu Catargiu was endowed by Grigore Filipescu and completed in 1778 by his son Pană Filipescu. The crypt of former Prime Minister Barbu Catargiu and his family is located beneath the church. Opening hours for churches with underground crypts should be checked against current information before travelling. At historic places of worship, access to underground rooms may have its own time window. Alongside the building history, this aspect is part of preparing for a visit.

The history continues at the former estate of the Filipescu boyar family. The estate included a manor house, a park and a church. The estate was later purchased by the Catargiu family. Today, only faint remains above ground survive of the former Catargiu manor house. The ruins are dated to 1820. The manor house, park and church describe the former extent of the estate, while only a limited remnant of the manor house itself has survived above ground. At former estates, the former overall complex and the buildings that remain today therefore do not represent the same state.

Two Sophora trees stand at the entrance to the churchyard in Maia and have been designated as natural monuments. The designation refers to the official status of these two trees. For visitors, their location at the entrance to the churchyard remains the specific connection to the historic site.

Access to the Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului” cu Cavoul lui Barbu Catargiu leads from Bucharest via DN 2A towards Movilița and then via DJ Dridu–Maia. Before travelling, current route conditions and traffic information for these roads can be checked. The two road sections mentioned can be checked separately when preparing for the journey. Current traffic information is particularly relevant for planning the departure time, without assuming any specific traffic situation. The sequence of road sections can be considered separately when planning the route. Current traffic information for DN 2A and DJ Dridu–Maia should each be checked before departure. The stated direction towards Movilița and the subsequent section via Dridu–Maia form part of the same access route, but are travelled consecutively. This order is part of the described journey.

The wider regional surroundings of Maia include Mânăstirea Snagov Monastery, Biserica Ortodoxă Fulga de Jos, Biserica Ortodoxă Fulga de Sus and Biserica Ortodoxă Boldeşti. The hills Movila Poşta, Movila Bratila Jilavele and Movila Dulbanul, as well as Parc Mizil, are also located in this wider regional area. Religious buildings, named hills and a park thus stand alongside one another as independent regional destinations, without any shared use or function being attributed to them.
