Glod lies in the upper reaches of the Slătioara Valley; the river flows into the Iza between Strâmtura and Bârsana. Glod lies northwest of Măgura Mare in the volcanic Țibleș range. The nearby area includes the peaks Vârful Brazilor, Vârful Gruiului, Vârful Scărişoarei and Vârful Văraticului.

Culture and Crafts

The wooden church „Sfântul Nicolae“ is listed in Glod as a historic monument under registration number MM-II-m-A-04581, with a construction date of 1700. It was built by a group of itinerant craftsmen from Moldavia. In Glod, furriers make artistically decorated sheepskin coats. The village is also the home of the Petreuș brothers, who have been regarded as particularly esteemed ambassadors of Maramureș folk song for more than half a century.

In Glod, țoluri, pănură for winter clothing and cergi are woven. Cergi and pănură are fulled in fulling mills for 8 to 48 hours; during this process, they shrink by 20 centimetres and become denser. In 2017, there were 12 water-powered fulling mills in Glod. At that time, the particularly well-maintained and continuously operating mills included those belonging to the families of Maria Roşca, Măricuţa Dunca, Ileana Vlad and Maria Marchiş. Also in 2017, the water-powered fulling mills in Glod were used to wash carpets, țoluri and raw wool.

Trails

An 11.5 km-long cycle path leads from Glod through the Slătioara Valley and over Șaua Măgura Glodului to Poienile Izei and back to Glod. A 3.6 km-long hiking trail, marked with a red dot on a white background, connects Glod, the Slătioara Valley, Izvorul Cald and Borcut. Another 3.6 km-long hiking trail bears a red cross on a white background and connects Glod, the Slătioara Valley and Șaua Măgura Glodului.

The hiking route from Glod to Biserica Dracilor and the summit of Măgura Glodului is approximately 10 km long and takes 4 to 5 hours. Different lengths, markings, destinations and stated durations help distinguish the routes by their time frame and course.

Places in the Surrounding Area

Mineral Springs

Southwest of Glod, near the road to Feredeauă, there is a sulphurous, carbonated borcut with extensive travertine deposits. The Glod mineral springs area was historically associated with sulphurous, saline and carbonated springs; empirical balneotherapy was formerly practised at them.
