Oglinzi: Church Architecture, Archaeology and Spa Resort

The Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi is a brick cross-shaped building. Work on the present church began in 1918, and it was completed in 1937. Its history, however, goes back further: the first church in Oglinzi was built as early as 1653 on the orders of Prince Vasile Lupu. The construction period of the present church, its earlier foundation, and the craftsmanship of the iconostasis therefore form three distinguishable historical layers.

The present-day Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi has an iconostasis carved entirely from linden wood. Patapie Cipenovici and Nicolae Milan made it between 1935 and 1937; both came from Bukovina. Extensive consolidation work is underway at the church. When visiting historic buildings, current opening hours and the status of conservation work may affect daily planning.

The Oglinzi-Băi archaeological site is a prehistoric salt-mining site from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. A second archaeological trace is the fortified settlement “Cetăţuia.” During the Cucuteni culture, the settlement there was more extensive than during the Starčevo-Criş culture and the Linear Pottery culture.

Oglinzi-Băi represents the use of salt in prehistoric times, while “Cetăţuia” represents a fortified settlement with several cultural settlement phases. Both sites highlight different aspects of Oglinzi’s archaeology.

The Oglinzi-Lăzăreni archaeological site lies on the right bank of the Brustura stream, at the confluence with the Babete stream. The waterways are therefore directly part of the setting of this site. Oglinzi also extends to the edge of the state forests. The Crucii and Alivanca hills stretch to the east and complement the landscape with named forest and hill areas. The landscape features of Oglinzi include the Brustura and Babete waterways, the edge of the state forests, and the eastern hills of Crucii and Alivanca.

Cabana Băile Oglinzi lies in the Sărata Valley area on the slope of Dealul Pleşu. Tourist trails run through the Oglinzi spa resort area. The valley, slope, and trails form a distinct landscape focus alongside the archaeological sites and church building. The Oglinzi Resort is located 3 km from Târgu Neamț and at an elevation of 480 m. Until 1939, the resort attracted visitors from all over the country. The treatment facilities at Oglinzi Resort included hot baths, paraffin packs, galvanic baths, diadynamic currents, ultrasound, massages, and therapeutic exercise.

The historic spa function thus encompassed both its documented role as a destination for visitors until 1939 and a broad range of therapeutic treatments. Oglinzi Resort lies in the Sărata Valley on the slope of Dealul Pleşu and at an elevation of 480 m.
